A good story in WIRED giving updates on the situation with Dr. Xiaofeng Wang. https://www.wired.com/story/xiaofeng-wang-indiana-university-research-probe-china/
@matthew_d_green that's IT?! They erased a tenured professor because he might have secured additional research funding and not filed the proper forms? Am I missing something that makes this worth the FBI getting involved?
@sleepfreeparent Cryptography is often classified as military technology. A researcher not disclosing that their military research is supported by a potentially hostile state might have sounded some alarm bells.
@tgodden nah that can't be it, the flow of crypto algorithms for govt applications doesn't go in that direction. Besides, he's a cybersecurity prof not crypto. I mean, if he didn't disclose foreign funding in a federal funding application, sure they could get him with the "misrepresenting any material fact to the feds" law, but that's just paperwork, not something a university would silently remove a professor for. There must be more to this
@sleepfreeparent I stand corrected then. But with swat and fbi involved, I'm assuming the university got pressured into removing him?
