  • If #IT was developed and maintained that way, we'd not have #Linux or even #Windows, most likely not even #CPM & #UNIX because "everyone uses punchcards and tubes, so stop complaining!"...

#NetworkEffects are #toxic when it comes to #SaaS and #proprietary shite, regardless if the bad guys are #discord, #Autodesk, #Adobe, #Apple or #Microsoft for that matter. (Don't even get me started on #SAP & #Oracle!)…

  • I just don't vibe with that appeal and would rather #SelfHost than compromise. If that makes me an outlyer then I'm happy to pay that price!

Others like @torproject@mastodon.social have their own @gitlab@mastodon.social / #GitLab servers #SelfHosted. - If you want a #Chat then consider #LiberaChat if you don't demand #privacy. Otherwise @delta@chaos.social / #deltaChat and/or #XMPP via @monocles@monocles.social & @gajim@fosstodon.org may be an option. - If you do want some #LoginWalling for some reason, consider @zulip@fosstodon.org / #ZulipChat as it has a nice #threading model that can handle both asynchronous communication and high traffic without becoming unfindable or unarchiveable. Yes and no.

#Apple's #iPad makes it easy to test, build and sell #CCSS [commercial closed-source software] at a premium.

  • I mean, I'm happy with my #X230Tablet but I do acknowledge this is an old device and it's rather the exception than norm...

Simply because #Wacom makes good passive stylus and pen-capable touchscreens.

  • So OFC companies that have the money and resources to build premium #apps will target the premium customers who by virtue ob being able to splash 4 digits on a tablet brand-new will be proven more able to pay for their software.

That's why #Autodesk won't even sell people a #Linux license for #Maya (or any of their other tools) unless one has proof of ownership of a certified workstation (i.e. HP Z-series) with a #RHEL [#RedHat] #Workstation #subscription active to begin with.

  • And yes they will run the machine's serial # to check if it's ordered with parts that fit their system requirements from the factory and will demand the same for RHEL. I've been there and had to do that before they even consider offering one a subscription!

Compare that to like #AffinityDesigner on #iOS (or rather "#iPadOS") and the fact that basically all iPad users are expected to have an Apple account and credit card linked to it for the #AppStore and it's no wounder the developers of creative apps will focus on that.

The only exception are #FLOSS #apps that are native to Linux and/or got started on other #Unix Systems [#blender started out on #IRIX as CCSS] and serve #macOS & #Windows as 2nd & 3rd tier platforms [i.e. #darktable oftentimes had no Windows builds because none of the devs had or wanted a Windows machine to test on!]

@dragonminded I guess with #Autodesk enshittifying their toolchain with more and more expensive subscriptions did force a lot if folks to actually invest time and effort and money into #KiCad.

  • And TBH, they deserve it, because there needs to be real #competition to Autodesk's stuff even if it's just for hobbyists and small-scale projects.

And yes, I still regret not having bought #Eagle when #CadSoft offered a #NonCommercial / #Hobbyist license for €125 one-time, cuz I'd still be rickin' that today.

So this year, the #opensource destroyed, the concept, that if you have a lot of money you can win always, after #Deepseek, now #Blender, millions of dollars, according to the judges they were not enough to win the #Oscar.
#Flow won against #Disney, U.P. #DreamWorks and #Netflix. #b3d #Blender3d, and don't forget who else has lost, #Autodesk, #maya.
And many others should be included in this list, as like some sites that no longer exist today, such as #CGTalk.
