#OTD 13 May 2024 I discovered that the #genealogy program on my tablet had an On This Day feature and I tapped into it to find an event to write about each day. Some days were sparse and others were overflowing.

I'm taking a break to do some adulting, as this sometimes took quite a bit of effort.

Thank you to everyone who read, commented, shared and taught me.

I'll still be here, just a bit more quiet.

#OTD 12 May 1800 Thomas Carter and Betsey Huston married in Nelson County, Kentucky. They were my fifth-great-grandparents via their daughter Milly, who was born about 1820 in Illinois. Their story is one that I have never researched. It's in a known blind spot in my research thinking. Going backwards in time is an ingrained habit that is hard to break. Being aware of blind spots helps overcome them.

#OTD 11 May 1889 Emma #Vossler married Ferdinand C Smith in Kansas City, Missouri. Their son, Leslie, was born the following year. Another son, Thomas, was born 10 years later. When Emma, age 43, died in 1913, the newspaper listed only her two sons surviving her. With a common name like Smith, tracing Ferdinand and his sons has been difficult. It would be nice to know if any cousins exist in this line.

#OTD 10 May 1907 My great-grandparents succumbed to a fad and named their newborn girls Ima and Ura. The twins joined their two older brothers on the farm of Thomas Merrill Allee and Laura Ann Pryor in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. Sadly, Ura Maggie died at 5 weeks old of unknown causes. Ima Nora Allee grew to adulthood, moving with her parents to Colorado. She married twice, but had no children. Her second husband, Maxwell Hersinger, served as marshal, sheriff and coroner in Lake City, Colorado. For many years they owned and managed guest cabins which provided a lovely spot for family vacations.

#OTD 9 May is a day that appears several times in 217 years in a single branch of my family tree. It starts with the marriage in 1771 of the retired soldier Lars Andersson Eckelman to Anna Ersdotter in Södermanland County. Their great-granddaughter Matilda Viberg was born 72 years later. Her daughter, Agnes Fors, married Gustaf Ekström, who was born in 1862 in Östergötland County. My great-grandparents emigrated to Chicago and continued the line. They have two descendants where the date again appears. Their grandson, Russell Johnson, married Bernice Nyquist, who was born in 1913. Their great-grandson, my first cousin, has a child who was born in 1988.

#OTD 8 May 1823 William J Kelly was born near Jasper, Tennessee, to John Kelly and Nancy Mayo, my fifth-great-grandparents. He was believed to be the youngest of 13 children. He had trouble finding his calling, as he spent time studying mathematics and medicine and also teaching school. In 1852 he went to work as a civil engineer for railroad companies. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army as an engineer. He is very unusual in my tree as a Southerner who crossed the line to the Union side. He was a Tennessee state legislator during the tumultuous period of reconstruction. [Goodspeed's biography]

#OTD 7 May 1792 Tobias Voßeler was born and baptized in Tuningen, Württemberg. He was the sixth of seven children born to my fourth-great-grandparents, Hans Jerg Voßeler and Anna née Voßeler. Tobias and his older sister, Christina, have birth and baptism records with a simple cross under their names, yet there is no death record. They likely died in the first few days of their lives. It is sad that their short lives didn't rate a mention in the death and burial records.

#OTD 6 May 1866 Andrew Lafayette "Fate" Allee married Martha Elizabeth Grant, his cousin, in Saline County, Arkansas. The area had been devastated during the Civil War, with battlefield debris littering the area. The couple, with extended family, moved to Texas after the birth of their eldest son. Martha bore two more children, dying sometime before her 30th birthday. Fate, my great-great-grandfather, remarried in 1876. His three children did not like their stepmother, a former schoolteacher.
