The Cable Matters DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter I ordered was a bust for getting (reliable) Linux 12bit HDR color in 120Hz VRR. This is with an AMD RX 9070XT in Bazzite.

It technically worked.. but only about half of the time. The rest of the time, it was either a black screen or no audio. It would randomly cut in and out.

Windows was a complete no-go with it beyond 4K 60Hz. Nothing but black screens unless I forced my TV into the crippled "Standard HDMI" mode.

I tried every firmware out there, and got the same result with all of them.

I did buy a deeply-discounted used unit from the manufacturer's Amazon storefront. So there's a chance the adapter was simply a dud.

Regardless, this one's going back to Bezos.

The color banding in Bazzite is starting to annoy me.

Running an AMD RX 9070XT through a Hisense U7K TV. So, I have to connect over HDMI.

I get 4K 120Hz HDR Freesync VRR and all that. But it's restricted to 8-bit YUV420 color. I guess this is all because the HDMI Forum was a big bag of dicks about licensing HDMI for open source drivers.

Apparently there's a Cable Matters DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter that might enable full color. (Question mark?)

That's my next rabbit hole to ponder, I guess...
