This is dumb but I didn't know #Nanowrimo was gone. I knew that had troubles with the AI thingy but didn't know it resulted in them folding.
That said, wondered who was in charge of their PR because *that* was a dumpster fire...

Gizmodo: Longtime Writing Community NaNoWriMo Shuts Down After AI Drama. “NaNoWriMo, the non-profit organization that grew out of the annual tradition National Novel Writing Month, had a solid 25-year run encouraging writers to speedrun the novel writing process, but it has come to an end. On Monday, the organization announced that it would cease operations due to ongoing financial issues, as […]
I'm so depressed to hear that NaNoWriMo is folding. I had a go at it in 2019 and wrote 30,000 words before I had a mammogram scare and went into a tailspin which meant I didn't finish. I have always felt like I would go back and try again some time. I liked the community and the support, the incentives, the local meetups, the merch... Now what? #NaNoWriMo
#NaNoWriMo is shutting down due to several years of deteriorating finances and inability to focus on fundraising because of child safety issues with the Young Writers space that had to take priority. Sad, though not surprised, to see #NaNoWriMo .org shutting down. They helped me in doing a lot of the #writing I've done. While they made some serious missteps in recent years, I'll remember their efforts before that with fondness.

One thing that makes me very happy about #NaNoWriMo crashing and burning: It's good evidence that the #writing world is not even remotely buying into the AI hype. (Unlike another industry I'm involved in... )
Having poor moderation practices that enabled grooming? That was bad for them. But promoting AI? That *killed* them. Writers are going: "AI? Fuck, no! ️
The nonprofit behind the annual National Novel Writing Month (#NaNoWriMo) challenge is closing its doors.
Kilby Blades, a romance author serving as NaNoWriMo's interim executive director, announced in a video and in emails posted to social media that the nonprofit, which challenged participants to crank out a draft for a novel every November, would be shuttering because, essentially, it's out of money.
Goodbye #nanowrimo. It didn't have to be like this, but Kilby chose every wrong thing to do and say she possibly could have and then got mad at the community for calling her out. #writingcommunity
Looks like #WritingMonth, my open source #NaNoWriMo alternative, just hit 750 users.

NaNoWriMo, the nonprofit organization behind the annual writing challenge to finish a novel in November, is shutting down due to financial struggles.
This comes after participation and fundraising decreased in recent years, and controversies over the use of AI tools and child grooming allegations.
The NaNoWriMo site will remain online, but the challenges will no longer be formally hosted.
Go Fash, (as in embrace GenAI and Child abuse) lose Cash
"In 2023, many writers abandoned NaNoWriMo after it refused to take a stand against the use of AI tools in writing. Around the same time, one of its moderators faced child grooming accusations, leading to more criticism from the community."
And that's how you destroy something after 20 years.

NaNoWriMo has gone bankrupt, after an ill-considered choice involving AI. (I don't know the details.) I was an ML for Years 4-5.
I'm in south-central Connecticut, Greater New Haven area. If anyone is interested in a go-it-alone or, let's say, federated but locally-oriented effort come November, I'm game. Contact me here or privately.
I'm a bit rushed right now, but I'll add details later in comments below this post. Questions and comments welcome.
