Just installed the Voyager client for #lemmy I expect to see a huge #redditmigration if popular subreddits like r/politics and r/technology are put behind paywalls.

I tried to switch to lemmy but get the warning "This app is closed-source and can possible collect your data"." Use it at your own risk" .
What does that mean?
@DigitalJacobin Hopefully they've figured out some mitigations from the last migration during the blackout. Automatically redirect new users to smaller instances, maybe, that volunteer to take in refugees, if they visit an already large instance like World or EE.

I’m old enough to remember when open API’s were a feature touted to draw 3rd party innovative development and users. Wait, that doesn’t make anyone that old. . .
Everyone wants to mimic Salesforce but they started with a ‘must have’ product. Reddit isn’t that.

A business that can create a booming ecosystem around their platform will be wildly successful and there are other ways to monetize the experience.
Perhaps a revenue share model with the 3rd party apps that includes an initial start up grace period? This would give the 3rd party business a chance and a reasonable share model would allow room for both orgs to make money.
Not much different than a franchise model, where parent company is providing the branding, structure, processes, and marketing, but they still leave room for local business owners to make money. If they demanded more than it was worth to keep the doors open, their brand would collapse.
