Martin Pugh
The evenings this week have been a bit of an adventure with the home lab. I'm migrating a number of random services onto a pair of new VM's, one on each of my two Proxmox hosts. They'll become DNS servers (authoritative using nsd and recursive using Unbound), including basic DNS filtering of the bad stuff as well as DNS64/NAT64 services so I can move to more IPv6 mostly systems at home. They'll probably also pickup NTP and any other services that make sense along the way.

My challenge has been to perform as much of the setup as possible using Ansible. I'm still very much a beginner but I seem to be making good progress.

I've been fighting with NSD/Unbound and reverse DNS but after a couple of days that's on hold. Forward resolution is working so I've moved some of the home VLAN's over to add some load. Holy crap they are fast. There's a little delay for a new site not in the cache but it soon picks up. It feels like an order of magnitude faster than my venerable pi 3b+ running pihole with the same DNS filtered list.

I'll crack the reverse DNS stuff at some point and now I've realised the reason I couldn't restart NSD after a change (so I was rebooting the VM) was because I didn't realise the "remote control" options are also needed for local control on the VM, it's a lot faster to get updates on place.

More work tomorrow night on the Ansible playbook with some better tags to manage operations without updating everything.

#HomeLab #OpenBSD #Unbound #nsd #Proxmox #ipv6 #ansible

Robert Kingett
This whole boundless/unbound situation really annoys me like no other. Well, correction, apart from the Patreon enshittification, but here seemed to be the perfect model. Blending crowd funding with publishing services offered by a publisher including editing, cover design, and more, after a project had been funded. Seems as though it would print money, right? It would, if the unbound team knew how to run a business without spending royalties as if royalties was income or taking venture capital. You might say but venture capital had nothing to do with them being unable to pay their authors. In a way, it kind of does. This link explains everything, but this is especially infuriating because it was the best of both worlds, for many. It sucks writing the book but then crowd funding to release it in additional formats. Crowd funding before the book is risky because readers could invest in their authors but never see the book in question. Ahem, Daemons in my Bbed, ahem.

This is actually why it would be great if more countries actually had grants for fiction writers, given to writers by the government. Other countries do this and this is how non-American writers do so well as artists in other countries, but we don't value arts in America. We value billionaires for some reason.

I just hate the whole demonization of the arts. It's just frustrating, but nobody will ever care about us, ever. To us, it's either grants, work now then get paid later, or just do everything yourself. I can't tell you how many projects I've finished, but I legitimately can't stand almost all self publishing platforms today. They either hold my work hostage, or worse, behave like this.

https://writerbeware.blog/2025/06/06/bankruptcies-of-unbound-and-albert-whitman-co-put-authors-between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place/

#Publishing #Boundless #Unbound
