the CLECO crew was out aggressively cutting down dead limbs & i suspect any remaining dead "snags" in the nearby area because there is an adult pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers flying around my yard & feeder & they seem to not know where to go-- they do visit sometimes BUT they are not feeder regulars like the Red-bellies & Downies...

i am afraid to see if the last remaining dead tree they were nesting in... is gone...

We woke up this morning in Oxford, Alabama. In a strange coincidence, my daughter told my wife they were spending the night in Oxford, Mississippi. If you’re just tuning in, we’re all headed to Savannah, Georgia, where I’ve rented a house for the week—a vacation rental, I suppose they call it. Hmmm... I just hope it goes more smoothly than that John Candy movie Summer Rental. I’d imagined stopping along the way to explore each town with my camera, but all that driving has left me wanting nothing more than a quiet room and a chance to unwind. The heat outside is staggering. Anyway, I went downstairs, fetched some coffee, and now we’re slowly getting ready to hit the road again.

I noticed the coffee isn’t particularly hot—definitely not lawsuit-level, and I like it hot enough to make McDonald’s nervous.

I keep talking about my fledgling Red-bellied Woodpecker but I finally got off my duff this morning to photograph this sweet baby

My heart is broken into pieces, my friend & bird guide of many years that i shared many adventures with, most recently in Panama, has died, it just doesn't seem fair -- he was much younger, i just assumed he would always be there & we were already talking about the next trip...

A gray bird with an open beak is perched in a sort of "chin up" posture wthat makes it look like birb is griping about something while just casually doing a few chin ups. THis is my fledgling Red-bellied Woodpecker that has been hanging around the yard. Photo by Peachfront. July 8, 2025.

The Cinnamon Crown and the Climber

I captured this image yesterday of a red-bellied woodpecker and a northern cardinal perched unusually close together. The cardinal had arrived first and didn’t seem too thrilled when the woodpecker showed up. As you can see, she eventually decided to take her leave.
