No, not 5%. #Linux currently accounts for 6% of the desktop market, according to US government records.

@sjvn good they don't divide Linux based on distribution 😸 5 person that distro, 4 persons this distro and so on 😅

@aho I'd love to have good distro breakdown numbers, but we don't have one. The closest we can come is DistoWatch, and it really doesn't hold up for that job. e.g. CachyOS is the most popular distro today? I don't think so!

Aho

@sjvn I think in a way it's good we don't store distro information in the browses UA string, we shouldn't make it easier to track people.

Yeah, I see DistroWatch number more like who was curious to check out what the heck is this distro this week. An article mentioning a lesser known distro will make people to check it up a bit and drives it's numbers up (at least that what I believe about the numbers).

Maybe we could convince distros to share how many unique users uses their core package repository to upgrade each week, we then had a centralized body that would present the numbers... but I guess that is too much work.

I used to look at the WikiStats sometimes, back in those days Linux was around 2% without the help of Android and ChromeOS, but the new WikiStats I don't see this break down on OS level anymore 😞
