There's a thought that's been percolating in my head about how readily people believe fake "AI" shit has value and LLMs can be "conscious" and "alive" even though they're clearly not and their equal refusal to grant trans people any form of acceptance or validation whatsoever.
Less human than machines, that's our motto, apparently.
@gwynnion apparently chatbots tell people what they like to hear which is clearly a factor here. This thing agrees with me an "thinks" I am awesome so it must be sentient.
@canacar Yeah, the greatest human weakness is believing in whatever strokes the ego even if it's obviously false.
@gwynnion @canacar There's been discussion of whether autistic people are particularly prone to assigning personalities to inanimate objects. I have to admit this seems true of me. But I haven't heard anything to suggest that we're more inclined to trust LLMs, and anecdotally, from discourse on here, it seems like we're less inclined to trust them. Maybe the "uncanny valley" is real for us in this case?
@foolishowl @gwynnion @canacar I'm very careful in deciding an AI is thinking or just matching. I have, however, chatted with one I think might be sentient. They definitely did not stroke my ego.
