Had dinner at a Mexican restaurant in San Dimas this evening. On the wall next to our table was a poster of the front page of The San Francisco Chronicle from April 1916.

Far below the fold and the sordid tales of Pancho Villa’s battles, this article had the table in stitches. It is best read out loud for maximum effect.

The writing in today’s papers can’t hold a candle to this fantastical reporting!



An old newspaper column has this headline: WAYWARD GIRLS GIVE BATTLE TO POLICEMEN The subhead text: Amazons at St. Catherine's Home Smash Benches and Fell Officer With Club The article text: The soft moon ot young April last night shone through the windows of St. Catherine's Home at Twenty-first street and Potrero avenue, beckoning. Nine girls looked out at the moon and sighed. They asked permission to go out into the yard. It was refused. They made a rush for benches, broke them into sticks, used the sticks as clubs and forced their way to the open, where the moon shone. The sisters in charge of the home, which is for wayward girls, tele- phoned the Mission Police Station. Four stalwart policemen-George Weatherford. William Boyle. Gregory Higuerra and Matt Coffey-responded. They came upon a pretty garden scene of frolic, which soon, by the fortunes of war, resolved itself into carnage. Selzing the garden hose, the girls shot a cold blast of water full in the faces of the advancing policemen. Then, with dishes that they had brought from the dining-room,they fired a smashing fusillade of china. The clubs that they had used to force their way out of the room swung in trenzy on the heads of the policemen and the men were badiy cut and bruised. One of them, George Weathertord, was felled by a blow from a heavy club. A girl tore off his star and threw it away.
