“#Microsoft Corp. is planning to #axe thousands of #jobs, particularly in sales, as part of the company’s latest move to trim its workforce amid heavy spending on #ArtificialIntelligence.
The cuts are expected to be announced early next month, following the end of Microsoft’s fiscal year, according to people familiar with the matter. The reductions won’t exclusively affect #SalesTeams, and the timing could still change, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss a private matter.
The company declined to comment.
The #terminations would follow a previous round of #layoffs in May that hit 6,000 people and *fell hardest on #product and #engineering positions,* largely sparing customer-facing roles like sales and marketing.”

@peterrenshaw The IT industry is eating its children.
@tg9541 it’s hard to watch, I cut my teeth just before the Internet morphed into the Web. Mandatory CS/ background in ‘C’ or RDBMS / 5 years experience before you could touch code. Now that opportunity is disappearing for technical careers.
However I sense a change coming up. It’s not me imagining it. I see it in youngsters sick of ephemeral digital stuff, computerised consumer tech, cars and experiences. If you can design, build things now is a good time to try a more human centric approach.
Everyone is going AI, my bet would be to pivot to the tangible.
@peterrenshaw Pivot to the tangible, that's what I'm trying to achieve where I work. Around me, I try to foster a culture that understands the manufactured product, not constructs made of reified abstractions. It's a bottom-up thing, connecting practitioners around the globe, find new ways to address problems. The top-down communication is exactly the opposite: repeat the same magic spells louder and even more often.
@tg9541 I have a label for the Corporate white collar sackings, it’s the #ZeroHourWork movement. I have enough to write about it. Cf #WhiteCollar tag.
@peterrenshaw I too have found fitting words for corporate culture. I guess that the two of us could spend hours going through the tangles of social relations, following words and things, finding metaphors, and smile in agreement. The reality for many people caught in the tangle is that of suffering and, not rarely, despair. A few others, of course, prefer to go the way of magic, painting shiny spandrel, the lies that pay, leaving poor souls in their wake who try to make that a reality.
