In 1994, Ukraine agreed to transfer nuclear weapons to Russia for dismantlement and became a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, in exchange for economic compensation and assurances from Russia, the United States and United Kingdom to respect the Ukrainian independence and sovereignty.

@DebErupts this is exactly why Ukraine should never make a deal for their natural resources without security and money built in, and up front.

@thunder_struck This is what Zelensky was trying to explain to Vance. Putin does not honor it's peace deals. They can't be trusted.
“He killed our people, & he didn’t exchange prisoners,” a visibly agitated Zelenskyy said, referring to Putin, who has been at war with Ukraine for 3 years. “What kind of diplomacy, JD, you are speaking about?"
Vance shot back that it was "disrespectful" for Zelenskyy to "come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media."
