U.S. fashion designer Willy Chavarria has apologized after his Oaxaca Slip-On, designed for Adidas, was criticized for cultural appropriation. The shoe was clearly inspired by huaraches, traditional leather sandals made by Indigenous artisans in Mexico, and was made in China without consultation or credit to the people of Villa Hidalgo Yalálag, where the design originates. @BBCNews reports that Adidas has apologized and contacted Oaxacan officials to discuss restitution. President Claudia Sheinbaum had previously spoken out about the the footwear.
