Here are a few of those human exploration zones, as they were called. Each is a circular area about 200 km across, though there was a lot of variation. For scale, recall that 1 degree N-S is 60 km. Most of these maps are 4 degrees N-S or about 240 km across but some are larger. Each has a landing site and various science or resource targets. In a few cases traverses were mapped. We won't see all but we can manage a few more tomorrow.

An abandoned test tube on Mars could hold the secret to life’s origins. Trump wants to leave it on the Red Planet. washingtonpost.com/opinions/20

'“Are we alone in the universe?” is the question we ask about life. On Earth, we might well ask: Are we alone among spacefaring nations in giving up just as we are poised to succeed? What will it say about us if, having recovered possible evidence of extraterrestrial life, we abandon it to the Martian dust?'

🚀 The future of space travel is accelerating.
Thanks to nuclear fusion propulsion, reaching Mars in just 30 days could be reality by 2027.

Warp speed remains fiction—but this fusion breakthrough might reshape interplanetary exploration and space technology.

Remember HEM-SAG? It looked at human landing sites on Mars, but each landing went to a different place. In October 2015 A workshop on Human Landing Sites was held at LPI near Houston. These were a different kind of site where successive landings would build up infrastructure. This map shows the global distribution, quite widely scattered. Several were at old landing sites: VIking 1 (site 9), Spirit (21), Opportunity (40), Curiosity (17).

There were lots of sites and several meetings to discuss them. This map summarizes the process and you can see people were busy! I won't look at all of these ideas in detail here. We might be back to doing this in coming years as the new Mars version of CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) gets going. New ideas, new locations.

Rather than look at more of those ideas I will jump to 2015 and a study of human exploration zones. Tomorrow!
