“Question  What is the relative severity of illness caused by SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?
Findings  In this cohort study of more than 141 000 nonhospitalized US veterans who were concurrently tested for all 3 viruses and diagnosed with a single infection between August 2022 and March 2023 or between August 2023 and March 2024, RSV was associated with lower 30-day risk of hospitalization, and COVID-19 was associated with a higher risk of long-term mortality through 180 days.
Meaning  COVID-19 was associated with more severe disease outcomes, including long-term mortality, compared with influenza or RSV.”

Update. An editorial in #JAMA and the #JAMANetwork.

"Some authors of scientific works in process have had to remove their names from publications for these publications to proceed; others have chosen to pause or withdraw their publications. While some of these actions are directly related to the executive order to #HHS employees to cease communications, many have been undertaken preemptively by authors who are not subject to the order but are presumably fearful of the challenges of communicating complex findings in this current environment. Some authors are engaging in anticipatory compliance by scrubbing from their manuscripts words they fear may be deemed, in the moment, politically unacceptable…We remain steadfast in our guidance to authors and readers across the JAMA Network journals and endorse and adhere to the standards set by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors [#ICMJE]…We will act flexibly, where appropriate, to ensure that censoring efforts will not silence the integrity of the scientific process or clear communication of scientific information important for health."

It looks like they have a biomarker for pain? This is great, except it doesn’t mean they’re actually going to give people pain medication. But this is a good start.

From the link: “This study provides evidence for a sensorimotor cortical biomarker signature for pain sensitivity. The combination of accuracy, reproducibility, and reliability suggests the PAF/CME biomarker signature has substantial potential for clinical translation, including predicting the transition from acute to chronic pain.”

They’re going to waste and destroy the lives of people with long covid by pretending that the stuff that never worked for #MECFS is the cure for #longCovid.

This way they can deny y’all disability benefits by saying if you just go to #CBT you will be cured. I mean, go to CBT therapy if you think it might help you, but it’s not going to heal your body.

I wasn’t interested in using CBT to gaslight myself into thinking I could get better when I couldn’t or that everything was fine when it wasn’t.

Fair warning, this is all y’all are gonna get for a couple decades. CBT and graded exercise therapy (#GET ) Are you sure you want to destroy your health for your boss or for brunch??

You don’t say!! This can’t be true. Shocking.

But now I have another example to use when I talk about how it is important to vote for the position of coroner. Because the science denying lazy republicans do this on purpose. Because they’re in a death cult.

According to a new US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (#CDC) analysis, only about a fifth of patients who died within a month of being discharged after an influenza hospitalization had influenza listed on their death certificate, hinting that deaths from flu-related complications may be undercounted.

“This is also not the first time that a commercial genomic database has caused concern when data usage did not meet customer expectations. For example, in 2018, law enforcement used the GEDmatch (advertised for genealogy and identifying family) to solve the “Golden State Killer” case. Although the specific case was sympathetic, consumers objected to general use of their data for forensic purposes. In response, GEDmatch sold its company to Verogen, whose entire purpose was to aid law enforcement. GEDmatch disclosed this on its new terms of service statement, but customer data were transferred unless they affirmatively opted out.”

The US #PHS currently recommends a water #fluoride concentration of only 0.7 mg/L: cdc.gov/fluoridation/about/com

Is that too high?

Not according to today's #JAMA #metaAnalysis: “a dose-response association [between #IQ and water fluoride] was…null at less than 1.5 mg/L", even in "low risk-of-bias studies": doi.org/10.1001/jamapediatrics

(The most viral posts I've seen about the JAMA paper ignore its second sentence.)

This is interesting. I understand why older people are becoming homeless at higher rates since 2020, but I don’t understand why that age group historically has been more homeless during the decades studied.
Weird.

“First, across all decades, the peak age groups in the distribution (34-36 in 1990; 40-42 in 2000; 49-51 in 2010; and 55-57 in 2020) are composed of persons born from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s, demonstrating a persistent cohort effect. Second, older persons composed a substantially larger share of the sheltered population in 2020 relative to earlier years; in 2020, those aged 60 years and above accounted for 18.8% (17 950 of 95 251) of the sheltered adult male population compared with 7.1% in 2000 (5830 of 82 420), a roughly 3-fold increase in absolute numbers.”

Umm what?!? Wtf is this study?

“Question  Does repeal of an 85-year-old law—Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act—that allows for people with cognitive disabilities to be paid subminimum wages affect social determinants of health in this marginalized population?
Findings  In this difference-in-differences study including 450 838 individuals from 2 states (New Hampshire and Maryland) that repealed Section 14(c), repeal was associated with a statistically significant increase in employment-related outcomes for people with cognitive disabilities in New Hampshire but not Maryland.
Meaning  In this study, repeal of Section 14(c) led to improved employment-related outcomes in people with cognitive disabilities, although effects varied by state.”

A article in #JAMA summarizes studies of the effects of #abortion bans n the #medical profession, especially in Texas. Fewer people enrolling in Texas medical schools, especially for #obgyn; obgyns leaving the states with the strongest bans; increased maternal deaths; downward effects on number of new doctors entering practice in the US.
