US air traffic control still runs on Windows 95 and floppy disks

Most air traffic control towers currently use paper strips to track aircraft movements and transfer data between systems using floppy disks, while their computers run Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system

US-#Flugsicherung will #Windows95, #Disketten und #Papierstreifen los werden

"Die US-Flugsicherung arbeitet mit veralteten Systemen, die zu Ausfällen geführt haben. Jetzt soll die #Flugsicherung modernisiert werden.

It's great that the FAA is finally retiring floppy disks and Windows 95 from air traffic control systems.

But replacing outdated tech with cloud-connected systems massively increases the attack surface. Higher efficiency and more cyber risk.

Is this really the system we should rely on for life-critical flights?

I kinda just tend to assume that everyone has a copy of VirtualBox, #pcem, and a multi-TB stash of ISOs from winworldpc.com on their NAS... but I'm occasionally reminded that this is not the case. If this is not you, but you need access to real #WindowsNT or #Windows95 or #Windows31 for an experiment or two, consider this a reminder that copy.sh/v86/ exists. #RetroComputing #VintageComputing
